5 Fun Yoga Poses To Inspire Your Practice At Home

Whether you are just starting to practice yoga at home, or you’ve been doing it for a while, it can be difficult to know what to do on your mat without a class or video. Most of us rush through the same favourite poses, rather than trying something new. However, mixing up your home practices helps you to work different muscles, and can help you gain more clarity and focus off the mat. Here are my top 5 fun poses you can do at home to challenge yourself.

1. Tree

Tree is a balance that’s fun to do!

Challenge your balance by moving the arms into different positions, looking up to the sky or even closing your eyes.

2. Tipping Star

I find this pose liberating!

If you’ve never tried it, it’s an accessible pose that’s really fun to do! Whether you hold this pose static or dynamically rock from side to side it’s a good workout.

3. Dancing Warrior

This combines 3 poses, Warrior II, Reverse Warrior + Extended Side Angle into a sequence that many students love.

Play with the length of the poses – notice the difference between flowing with your breath vs holding each pose for a few breaths.

4. Fallen Star

It’s easiest to come into this pose from a 3 legged downward dog.

Bring the knee of the raised leg in towards the opposite wrist, straightening the leg and then raise the arm.

This pose is often referred to as “Rock Star” probably because it makes you feel like a rockstar when you find it!

5. Wild Thing

Try coming in from a side plank pose, or “flipping your dog” - like I’m doing below. To try this come into 3 legged dog, bend the knee of your raised leg and use gravity to turn yourself over as you bring the foot to the ground on the other side.

Here you can see it from both sides - it’s easier than it looks I promise!

This challenging pose opens your chest and gives you a full body workout. It’s a firm favourite in my classes as you can really have fun with it!

Conclusion

I hope these fun poses bring some inspiration to your home practice.
