Top 10 Things To Do In Summer Near Hitchin (Updated 2024)

Whether you are going away this summer or not, this is a great time of year to get outside and try new experiences. To inspire you to try something new without breaking the bank, here’s my top 10 fun days out in or near North Hertfordshire this summer. There’s a mix of things you can do alone, with your friends and your family. Enjoy!

  1. Hitchin Festival (Sat 29th June - Sun 28th July)

Every year Hitchin hosts a festival full of events to promote culture and entertainment throughout Hitchin. There’s concerts, poetry, theatre, as well as plenty of local clubs putting on something special for the occasion!

One event you might be interested in is the Deep Time & Foraging Walk in Oughtonhead Nature Reserve on Saturday 27th July.

2. Pop Up Garden Yoga (Hitchin)

Ever wanted to do yoga outside? Let’s take your practice into the glorious outdoors so you can enjoy the British sunshine (when it’s here!) and foster a deeper connection with nature.

I’m going to be offering some small garden yoga classes in my garden in Walsworth, Hitchin. These will be ‘pop-up’ classes, so scheduled at relatively short notice when the weather is lovely and I have space in my garden.

These will be weekday evenings or weekend mornings, I will try and vary to allow as many of you to come along as possible.

If you would like to know when garden yoga is taking place then please enter your details below!

    3. Hitchin Street Food (4th July, 1st August)

This street-food focused event takes place 4-9pm on a handful of Thursday evenings this summer. Taste different cuisines from across the world, listen to live music and indulge in a tipple or two at the Hitchin Riverside. Find out more.

    4. Vinofest - 30th June 2024

After the success of its first festival last summer, the Wee Vinoteca is back with “Vinofest” on Sunday 30th June. I went last year and it was a really fun event, and this year promises more stalls and activities for kids.

Learn how to taste wine, enjoy live music and DJs and sample food from some local favourites as this family-friendly wine festival. Book here

    5. Knebworth House Dinosaur trail  (Open every day)

Last year I went to Knebworth house and had a gorgeous day out in the gardens with a picnic. My particular highlights were the rose garden and the dino trail – which I have to say is just as entertaining and educational for adults as kids! Visiting inside the beautiful Georgian house is also perfect rainy day weather. Check out the website for upcoming special events and workshops.

    6. Cider & Cheese Festival (5th & 6th July)

This is the 5th year of the cider and cheese festival, hosting the best of British ciders and cheeses!

This event takes place at Hitchin Football club, and there is live music on both days.

    7. Hitchin Comic Con - Sat 13th July

Hitchin is hosting its first ever Comic Con event in the market square. With costumes, face painting and a toy fair, it’s set to be an interesting event!

Free entry and family friendly - could be fun!

    8. Hitchin Beach (6th - 26th August)

The Hitchin beach is back! If you can’t get to the seaside this summer, you can get some sand beneath your toes in the town centre. Bring your own buckets and spades, or relax in a deck chair and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere! No need to book – just turn up!

    9. Stand-alone farm (Open every day)

Recommended by my local friends with young children, this small working farm is a lovely day out. You can meet the animals and see how they are cared for by the friendly staff, and there’s a café and sand pit! There’s various workshops on this summer so worthwhile planning your visit before you go: https://standalonefarm.com/

    10. The Living Theatre Open-Air Art trail (Sat 29th June 2024 - Weds 31st July 2024)

The Living Theatre’s first ever Art Trail features a beautiful array of outdoor installations from local artists inspired by the environment, community and the arts.

    Open all day everyday.
